"The stage is not merely the meeting place of all the arts, but is also the return of art to life."
- Oscar Wilde
We will spend three full days in the many-faceted, always fascinating world of theater in New York. We will read, discuss and view three top plays, a musical, a drama both the hottest tickets in NY -- and a new promising play still in the final stages of development. Our three skilled discussion leaders from the Great Books Foundation are also all seasoned thespians with experience on the stage and in the role of director. They will help us understand how a play is put together and the decisions that are made at various steps of the way. We hope to meet with playwright and lecturer, Elizabeth Sharland, once a personal assistant to Yul Brynner. After several successful books about British theatre, she has turned her hand to the Great White Way, in A Theatrical Feast in New York. We will drink and dine at theater-crowd landmarks such as the famous Blue Bar at the Algonquin Hotel, the funky pink-and-blue plaster Edison Caf, known half jokingly as the Polish Tea Room, and Broadway legend, Joe Allens. We will stay at Club Quarters Midtown, 40 W. 45th St., in the heart of Broadway.
