Founded in 1996, the goal of the Scottish Literary Tour Trust is to "establish a dialogue covering over 300 years of Scotland's rich literary history." The Trust offers two distinct yet equally impressionable tours: The Literary Bus Tour and the more popular Literary Pub Tour. The Literary Bus Tour departs two times daily from Waverley Bridge and lasts approximately one hour after which participants may join additional bus tours offered by Mac Tours.
The Literary Pub Tour has gained increasing popularity over the past decade and has won several awards for excellence including the Scottish Thistle Award for Arts & Tourism. The tour lasts approximately two hours with participants convening at the Beehive Inn at Grassmarket. The tour is led by two scripted actors who guide the group to four of Edinburgh's legendary pubs: The Beehive Inn, The Jolly Judge, Ensign Ewart, and Milne's. En route the actor's cleverly deliver dialogue about each particular establishment and the writers who frequented there: Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Edwin Morgan, Norman McCaig, and Hugh McDiamond to name a few.
The Scottish Literary Tour Trust is also connected to The Makar's Court Literary Tour of The Edinburgh Writer's Museum. That tour offers an hour long outdoor theatre performance pertaining to the history of Scottish Literature. Also available at the Scottish Literary Tour Trust website is Land Lines, an illustrated guide to the literature and landscape of Scotland.
